Breaking the Band 6.5 Barrier
Writing is statistically the lowest-scoring module for most IELTS candidates. Many test-takers possess excellent English but fail to hit the Band 7.0 or 8.0 mark because they fall into specific “traps” that examiners are trained to spot. Over my 15 years of coaching, I’ve identified five recurring mistakes that can be easily rectified.

1. Over-using “Big Words” Incorrectly
Many students believe that using obscure vocabulary will automatically increase their score. This is a myth. The “Lexical Resource” criteria actually values Precision and Appropriateness. Using a complex word in the wrong context or with the wrong preposition will lower your score. Fix: Focus on using topic-specific vocabulary naturally.
2. Lack of a Clear Stance (Thesis)
If the prompt asks “To what extent do you agree or disagree?”, you must state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. If you are neutral, state it clearly. A “foggy” stance leads to a low “Task Response” score. Fix: Write a clear thesis statement in your first paragraph.
3. Poor Paragraphing Structure
An essay should be a logical flow of ideas, not a list of points. Each body paragraph must focus on one central idea. Many students mix three or four points in a single paragraph, which confuses “Coherence and Cohesion.” Fix: Use the PEEL method (Point, Explanation, Example, Link) for every paragraph.
4. Memorized Templates
Examiners are highly trained to spot “canned” answers or “cliché” phrases like “This is a burning issue in the contemporary world.” These phrases add no value and are often ignored when calculating your word count. Fix: Use your own voice. Start with a direct paraphrase of the question.
5. Ignoring the “Task Response”
The most common mistake? Not answering every part of the question. If the prompt asks for “advantages and disadvantages,” but you only spend three lines on the disadvantages, your score will be limited to Band 6.0. Fix: Spend 2 minutes planning to ensure you address every keyword in the prompt.
