Breaking the Band 6.5 Ceiling
Writing Task 2 is often the most challenging part of the IELTS exam. Most students possess good English but fail to reach Band 7.5 or 8.0 because they lack “Logical Cohesion” and “Task Development.” The “To what extent do you agree or disagree?” prompt is the most common and requires a specific strategic approach.
As a PhD expert with over 15 years of experience coaching elite scorers, Dr. Shruti Mehtaa has developed a blueprint that ensures your essay meets the exact criteria examiners look for in 2026.

The 4-Paragraph Blueprint for Success
For a Band 8.0+, you don’t need a 6-paragraph essay. You need 4 paragraphs that are perfectly linked and deeply developed.
1. Introduction: The Hook and the Thesis
- Paraphrase: Rewrite the prompt using high-level synonyms. Avoid copying words directly.
- Thesis Statement: Clearly state whether you agree or disagree. Be decisive.
- Outline: Briefly state the two main reasons you will discuss.
2. Body Paragraph 1: First Argument
Start with a Topic Sentence that directly supports your thesis. Follow this with 3-4 sentences of explanation. Finally, provide a Specific Example (not a general one) to solidify your point.
3. Body Paragraph 2: Second Argument
Follow the same structure as the first. Ensure you use Cohesive Devices (e.g., “Furthermore,” “In addition to this,” “Consequently”) to link the ideas.
4. Conclusion: No New Ideas
Restate your thesis and summarize your main points. Never introduce new information in the conclusion.
Key Strategies for 2026
- Fully Extend Your Ideas: Don’t just list 3 reasons. Pick 2 reasons and explain them deeply. Ask yourself “Why?” after every sentence to ensure you are developing the point.
- Lexical Precision: Use topic-specific vocabulary naturally. Instead of “bad environment,” use “ecological degradation” or “environmental instability.”
- Grammatical Flexibility: Incorporate conditionals (If… then…), passive voice, and relative clauses. An essay with only simple sentences will never cross Band 6.5.
