Understanding the Germany Opportunity Card (Chancenkarte)

Launched in 2024, the **Chancenkarte** is Germany's new points-based system designed to make it easier for skilled workers from non-EU countries to find employment in Germany. Unlike the traditional Job Seeker Visa, the Opportunity Card allows you to work part-time (up to 20 hours a week) while you look for a permanent role.

How to Qualify?

There are two ways to qualify for the Chancenkarte:

  1. Fully Recognized Qualification: If your foreign degree is already fully recognized in Germany, you receive the card immediately without needing to reach a points threshold.
  2. The Points System: If your qualification is only partially recognized or you have a relevant degree/vocational training, you must score at least **6 points** from the categories listed below.

The Points Categories

Qualifications (Up to 4 Points)

4 points are awarded for partial recognition of a foreign professional qualification. 1 extra point is given if your occupation is on the "Shortage Occupations" list (e.g., IT, Engineering, Nursing).

Work Experience (Up to 3 Points)

3 points for at least 5 years of professional experience in the last 7 years. 2 points for at least 2 years of experience.

Language Skills (Up to 3 Points)

3 points for B2 level German. 2 points for B1 level German. 1 point for A2 level German or C1 level English.

Age (Up to 2 Points)

2 points if you are under 35. 1 point if you are between 35 and 40.

Financial Security

To get the visa, you must also prove that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Germany (approximately **€1,027 per month**). This is usually done through a **Blocked Account**.
