How the UK Student Visa Points System Works

The UK's Student Visa (formerly Tier 4) operates on a Points-Based System (PBS). To successfully apply for a visa, you must achieve a total of **70 points**. These points are non-negotiable and are awarded based on three main criteria:

50
CAS

A valid Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies from a licensed university.

10
Financials

Proof that you have enough money to pay for your course and support yourself.

10
English

Proof of English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS, PTE, or previous education).

1. The CAS Requirement (50 Points)

The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) is an electronic record that your university sends to UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI). It contains a unique reference number and details about your course, tuition fees, and qualifications used to obtain the offer.

2. The Financial Requirement (10 Points)

You must demonstrate that you have enough money to pay for your tuition fees (as stated on your CAS) and your living costs.

  • Inside London: £1,334 per month (for up to 9 months).
  • Outside London: £1,023 per month (for up to 9 months).

Note: The money must have been in your bank account (or your parent's/guardian's account) for at least 28 consecutive days ending no more than 31 days before you apply for the visa.

3. The English Language Requirement (10 Points)

Most students must prove their knowledge of English by passing a Secure English Language Test (SELT). Common tests include IELTS Academic, PTE Academic, and LanguageCert. If you are studying at a Higher Education Provider (HEP) at degree level, the university can usually assess your English level themselves.
