Q. How many sections are in the Listening test?
There are four sections with 40 questions in total, lasting about 30 minutes.
Q. Can I use a pen for the Listening test?
For the paper-based test, you must use a pencil. For the computer-based test, you type your answers. (Note: From mid-2026, IELTS will no longer be offered as a paper-based test. All tests will be delivered on computer. Updates to IELTS test delivery)
Q. Will I have time to transfer my answers?

Q. Are all accents used in the Listening test?
A variety of English accents are used, including British, Australian, American, and Canadian.

Don't stop; keep going. The recording is only played once.

Yes, incorrect spelling and grammar will cause you to lose marks.
Q. Can I write in all capital letters?
Yes, you can write your answers in all CAPS in the Reading and Listening sections.
Q. How is the Listening score calculated?
Each correct answer earns 1 mark. The 40 marks are then converted to the IELTS 9-band scale.
Q. Are there negative marks in IELTS?
No, there is no negative marking for incorrect answers.
Q. How many texts are in the Reading section?
There are three long texts for Academic and several shorter texts for General Training.
Q. How much time is given for Reading?
You have exactly 60 minutes for the Reading section, including transferring your answers.
Q. Are the Reading questions in order?
Most question types, like Multiple Choice and True/False/Not Given, usually follow the order of the text.
