Understanding
Adaptive Scoring
The Digital SAT uses multistage adaptive testing. Your performance on the first module of each section determines the difficulty of the second module. To achieve a top score, you need to perform well on the harder second module.
Accuracy in Module 1 determines your scoring ceiling.
Colleges superscore — they take your highest section scores across dates.

SAT Pattern & Rules FAQ
Everything you need to know about the Digital SAT format.
Q. How long is the Digital SAT?
The Digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes total. Reading & Writing (64 min) and Math (70 min), divided into two modules each.
Q. What is adaptive testing in the Digital SAT?
Each section has two modules of equal length. Your performance on Module 1 determines the difficulty of Module 2. Performing well gives you a harder Module 2, which allows access to a higher score range.
Q. Is the Digital SAT easier than the paper SAT?
The Digital SAT is not easier, but the format is more streamlined. It is shorter (2h 14min vs 3h), passages are shorter, and you can use a built-in graphing calculator for all Math questions.
Q. What is the SAT score range?
Total scores range from 400 to 1600. The Reading & Writing section and Math section each contribute 200-800 points. The national average is around 1050.
Q. Can I use my own calculator on the Digital SAT?
Yes, you can use an approved calculator, but the Bluebook testing app includes a built-in Desmos graphing calculator that is available throughout the Math section.
Q. What types of passages appear in Reading & Writing?
Passages cover literature, history/social studies, science, and poetry. Each passage is paired with a single question, and passages are shorter than the paper SAT format.
Q. Does the SAT have an essay section?
No. The SAT Essay was discontinued in 2021. The current Digital SAT has only Reading & Writing and Math sections.
Q. How many times can I take the SAT?
There is no limit. Most students take the SAT 2-3 times. Colleges generally consider your highest composite score (superscoring).
Q. What is the Math section like?
Math covers Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem-Solving & Data Analysis, Geometry & Trigonometry. Module 1 includes both multiple-choice and student-produced response questions.
Q. How do I register for the Digital SAT?
Registration is through the College Board website. The test is offered internationally at designated test centres. You bring your own laptop or tablet with the Bluebook app installed.
