IELTS exam pattern in 2026 — The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes across 4 sections: Listening (30 min, 40 questions), Reading (60 min, 40 questions), Writing (60 min, 2 tasks), and Speaking (11-14 min, 3 parts). Scores are reported on the 9-band scale from Band 1 (Non-User) to Band 9 (Expert User). IELTS offers two versions — Academic (for university admissions) and General Training (for migration and work). Over 3.5 million IELTS tests were taken globally in 2024, and the test is accepted by over 11,000 institutions worldwide. Conducted by the British Council and IDP, score validity is 2 years. Registration fee is approximately $250 USD.
Listening

9-Band Scoring
IELTS scores range from Band 1 (Non-User) to Band 9 (Expert User). Each university and immigration authority sets its own minimum band score requirements.
Most UK universities require 6.5 - 7.5 overall.
Canadian PR requires CLB 7 (IELTS 6.0 in each section).

Q. What is the total duration of the IELTS exam?
The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), and Speaking (11-14 min). Speaking may be scheduled on a different day.
Q. What is the difference between IELTS Academic and General Training?
Academic is for university admissions and professional registration. General Training is for migration and work experience. The Reading and Writing sections differ; Listening and Speaking are identical.
Q. How is the IELTS 9-band score calculated?
Each section is scored from 1-9 in half-band increments. Your overall band score is the average of four sections, rounded to the nearest half-band. Each university sets its own minimum requirement.
Q. Can I use a pen for the Listening and Reading sections?
For paper-based IELTS, you use a pencil for all sections. For computer-delivered IELTS, you type your answers. Speaking is always face-to-face with an examiner.
Q. What types of accents appear in the Listening test?
You will hear a range of native-speaker accents including British, Australian, New Zealand, American, and Canadian accents.
Q. How many questions are in the Reading section?
There are 40 questions in the Reading section, divided across 3 passages. Question types include multiple choice, identifying information (True/False/Not Given), matching headings, and sentence completion.
Q. Is there a negative marking in IELTS?
No. There is no negative marking. You should attempt every question, even if you are unsure of the answer.
Q. Can I cancel my IELTS score if I am unhappy?
You cannot cancel a score after seeing it. However, you can choose to sit for the test again as many times as you wish. Scores are valid for 2 years.
Q. What is the Speaking test format?
The Speaking test has 3 parts: Part 1 (Introduction & Interview, 4-5 min), Part 2 (Long Turn/Cue Card, 3-4 min), and Part 3 (Discussion, 4-5 min). It is recorded for quality assurance.
Q. How long does it take to get IELTS results?
For paper-based IELTS, results are released 13 days after the test. Computer-delivered results are available in 3-5 days.
