New Zealand Green List 2026: The Fastest Way to Residence

New Zealand’s 2026 Immigration Strategy

As of May 2026, New Zealand has further refined its Green List to attract the world’s best talent in healthcare, engineering, construction, and technology. The Green List is designed to provide a faster, more certain pathway to residency for skilled workers in roles that are in high demand.

Dr. Shruti Mehtaa, a PhD expert in global education and career strategy, explains why 2026 is the best time to consider New Zealand for your professional growth and long-term settlement.

Role on the Green List?

Check if your occupation qualifies for Straight to Residence or Work to Residence pathways.

Check My Eligibility

The Two Pathways to Residence

New Zealand offers two distinct residency pathways for Green List roles:

1. Tier 1: Straight to Residence

If your occupation is on Tier 1 (e.g., Doctors, Engineers, ICT Managers), you can apply for a Resident Visa immediately after securing a job offer from an Accredited Employer. There is no need to wait or work for a specific period first.

2. Tier 2: Work to Residence

If your occupation is on Tier 2 (e.g., Teachers, Specialized Nurses, Trades workers), you can apply for a Resident Visa after working in New Zealand for 24 months in that role.

Important 2026 Updates

Median Wage Increase

As of March 2026, the immigration median wage has increased to NZD $35.00 per hour. This is a critical threshold for many Green List roles. Ensure your job offer meets or exceeds this amount to qualify for the residency pathway.

Expanded Trades List

Several trades roles, including Metal Fabricators, Welders, and Panel Beaters, have been added to the Tier 2 list to address the construction boom in major cities like Auckland and Christchurch.

General Requirements

To qualify for any Green List pathway, you must:

  • Be 55 years old or younger.
  • Hold a job offer from an Accredited Employer.
  • Meet the specific qualifications or registration requirements for your role.
  • Satisfy standard health and character checks.
  • Prove your English language proficiency (e.g., IELTS).
