What is PTE Academic?

PTE Academic is the original computer-based English test designed for Study Overseas and certain visa categories.

  • Accepted by: Nearly all universities in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, USA, and Canada.
  • Content: Academic-focused tasks like “Summarize Spoken Text” (lectures) and “Re-tell Lecture.”
  • Goal: Proving you can survive and thrive in a classroom environment.

What is PTE Core?

Launched recently, PTE Core is a faster, more “real-life” version of the test specifically for Economic Migration (PR) and work permits.

  • Accepted by: IRCC (Canada) for all permanent residency pathways and citizenship. Currently, it is the primary PTE test for Canadian immigration.
  • Content: Tasks are more practical. For example, instead of summarizing a lecture, you might “Respond to a Situation” or write a “Personal Email.”
  • Goal: Proving you can communicate in a professional and social setting.

  2. If you want to apply for Canada PR: Take PTE Core. It is specifically designed to meet the CLB requirements mandated by the Canadian government.
  3. If you want to work abroad: This depends on the country. Most Australian work visas accept Academic, but Canada requires Core.

Both tests use the same underlying AI scoring engine, so the difficulty level is similar. The main difference is the Context. To succeed, you must train for the specific task types of the test you choose.
