How is the IELTS Band Score Calculated?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) uses a 9-band scoring system to report scores in a consistent manner. You receive individual band scores for Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking, as well as an Overall Band Score.
The Rounding Rule
IELTS scores are rounded to the nearest whole or half band. If the average of the four components ends in .25, it is rounded up to the nearest half band (e.g., 6.25 becomes 6.5). If it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band (e.g., 6.75 becomes 7.0).
Academic vs. General
While the Listening, Writing, and Speaking components are the same for both tests, the Reading component differs. In General Training Reading, you need more correct answers (raw score) to achieve the same band score as in the Academic Reading test.

IELTS Scoring & Exam FAQ
Q. Is this IELTS calculator official?
While not an official IDP or British Council tool, our calculator uses the latest 2024-25 raw-score-to-band mapping tables to provide 99% accurate results for both Academic and General Training versions.
Q. How are IELTS band scores rounded?
IELTS uses a 'rounding up' rule. If your average across four modules ends in .25, it rounds up to .5. If it ends in .75, it rounds up to the next whole band. This calculator automatically handles this logic for you.
Q. Why is the Reading score different for Academic and General?
General Training Reading is considered easier in terms of text complexity, so you need more correct answers (raw score) to achieve the same band as compared to Academic Reading.
Q. How many times can I retake the IELTS exam?
There is no official limit to how many times you can take IELTS. However, we recommend at least 2 weeks of focused coaching between attempts if you are stuck at the same band score.
Q. What is a good IELTS score for Canada PR?
To maximize your CRS points, you should aim for a CLB 9. This means achieving a minimum of 8.0 in Listening and 7.0 in Reading, Writing, and Speaking each.
Q. Is the score for IELTS on Computer different from Paper?
No. The difficulty level, scoring logic, and band descriptors are identical for both computer-delivered and paper-based IELTS exams.
