PTE Core: The New Gateway to Canada PR
Since February 2024, IRCC has officially started accepting PTE Core for all Canadian economic immigration programs (like Express Entry). This was a game-changer! But should you still take the PTE Academic if you are a student? Let’s break it down.

| Feature | PTE Academic | PTE Core |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Study Visas & Professional Registration | Canada PR & Work Visas |

| Writing | Summarize Written Text, Essay | Summarize Written Text, Email Writing |
| Speaking | Describe Image, Retell Lecture | Describe Image, Respond to a Situation |
Why PTE Core is “More Relatable”
One of the biggest advantages of PTE Core is its vocational nature. Instead of listening to a lecture on biology (Academic), you might listen to a conversation about a workplace issue or a household repair.
The Email Writing Task
In PTE Academic, you write a formal 200-300 word essay. In PTE Core, you write a 100-word email based on a specific situation. For many people, writing an email is far more intuitive than crafting a complex academic essay.
Which Test Should You Take?
The choice depends entirely on your end goal:
- Take PTE Academic if: You are applying for a Study Visa or need professional registration as a nurse or doctor in Australia/UK.
- Take PTE Core if: You are purely applying for Canadian Permanent Residency (PR) through Express Entry, PNP, or other economic streams.
Impact on your CRS Score
PTE Core scores are mapped to CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) levels. Achieving a “CLB 9” is the holy grail for Express Entry, and many find the vocational nature of PTE Core makes this target more achievable than IELTS General.
